Rapper 50 Cent Sues Taco Bell
The rapper 50 Cent is suing Taco Bell because he says that the restaurant has used his name without his permission in their advertising that asks him to call himself 99 Cent. In a federal lawsuit, he also claimed that the Taco Bell print ad features him asking to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent, or 99 Cent. The ad is part of a Taco Bell "Why Pay More?" campaign that promotes items that cost less than a dollar.
The company supposedly sent a bogus letter that requested the name change to the news media but not to 50 Cent. He didn't find out about the letter or that he was featured in the ad campaigns until he saw a news report about it. He wants $4 million in damages.

Poor Haitians Having to Eat Dirt
Due to rising food prices, many poor people in
Food prices around the entire world have increased due to higher oil prices and oil is needed for fertilizer, irrigation, and transportation. The increase in demand for biofuels is also affecting the food markets. The
The 2007 hurricane season caused floods and crop damage so bad that the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency had to declare states of emergency in
The cost of the dirt isn’t free. The dirt to make 100 cookies costs $5. About 80 percent of the Haitian population lives on less than $2 per day. Merchants would bring the dirt by truck from a central town to the food market. Women would buy the dirt and then process it into mud cookies. They would have to strain out the rocks and clumps from the dirt on a sheet and stir in shortening and salt to make the cookies. The cookies would be left out in the sun to dry. Some people sell the cookies in the market or on the street to make money.
It is not safe to eat the mud cookies because dirt can have deadly parasites or toxins. The cookies can also cause malnutrition. A positive thing about the cookies though is that they can strengthen the immunity of fetuses in pregnant women.

Woman Loses Thousands of Dollars in Lawsuit for Downloading Music
Thomas is ordered to pay the six record companies that sued her for $9,250 for each of the 24 songs that they are focusing on in this case. They say she shared a total of 1,702 songs. This is the first time that one of the music industry's lawsuits went to trial. Most people settle and pay the companies a few thousand dollars. Thomas thought that she didn't do anything wrong and proceeded with the lawsuit against her. Thomas claimed she didn't own a file sharing account with Kazaa but evidence showed that the Internet address belonged to her.
Jammie Thomas is 30 years old and lives paycheck to paycheck and now she could get a fourth of her paycheck garnished for the rest of her life. Including the attorney fees, she could owe nearly half a million dollars.

Study Shows that Alcohol Increases Risk of Cancer
The study analyzed the drinking habits of 70,033 women and asked them various questions during health exams between the years 1978 and 1985. By the year 2004, 2,829 of those women had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The study found that women who had one or two drinks a day increased their risk by 10 percent and women who had more than three drinks a day increased their risk by 30 percent.
Experts think that alcohol raises hormone levels in the blood to levels that could cause cancer. Doctors say that other factors, such as genetics, obesity, and age are more important factors that can raise the risk of breast cancer.

A Thief and Victim Meet Again
The victim went to the store to report that someone had stolen her purse and used her credit card fraudulently to buy $200 worth of DVDs. Several minutes later while the victim was standing there a man went to the counter and tried to return eight DVDs in exchange for cash. At the time the two didn't recognize each other.
When the manager came to the counter to handle both transactions she immediately made a connection with the situation. That is when the thief ran out of the store.
The thief admitted to the police that he had stolen the purse and used the victim's credit card at the bookstore, a grocery store, and a Walmart that totaled up to $716 worth of goods.
A Cat Predicts Patient's Deaths
The 2-year-old cat was adopted as a small kitten and raised in a third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The facility treats people with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and other illnesses. After about six months, the staff noticed that the cat would make his own rounds, like the doctors and nurses. He'd sniff and observe patients and then sit beside people who would end up dying in a few hours. The doctors say that most of the patients are so ill that they don't even realize he's there.
The nursing home staff are okay with the cat being there because his warnings give families a better chance at saying goodbye to their loved ones.
