Rapper DMX Arrested at Arizona Mall

The rapper DMX was arrested at a mall in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday after suspicion that he gave a false name and Social Security number to a hospital to avoid paying for medical expenses. He went to Scottsdale’s Mayo Clinic in April and used the name Troy Jones, even though his real name is Earl Simmons, and tried to avoid paying the $7,500 bill.

DMX started being investigated about this incident after an animal neglect investigation that happened last year at his Phoenix home. The bond for this recent case has not been set yet.

China Putting Limits on Internet Video

China is putting restrictions on the broadcasting of Internet videos by only allowing citizens to use sites that are ran by state-controlled companies. They are also requiring that providers report questionable content to the government. The regulations will start to take effect on January 31st and were approved by the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television and the Ministry of Information Industry.

Under the new policy, Websites that provide videos or allow people to upload videos have to get government permits and applicants have to be state-owned or state-controlled companies. The policy will also ban providers form broadcasting video that has national secrets, hurts the reputation of China, disturbs social stability, or has pornography. Video providers will be required to delete and report this kind of content.

The permits will have to be renewed every three years and video providers that commit major violations might be banned from providing online videos for five years. It is not clear if the popular Website YouTube will be affected since they are available in China and runs a Chinese-language Website. It also isn’t known if any of YouTube’s computer servers are located in China.

Facebook Uses New Tracking Feature

Some users of the Facebook website are complaining that their recent marketing program is showing their purchases made online to their friends on the site. The new feature places a small box in the corner of Web browsers that keeps track of purchases made at Fandango, Overstock, and other online retailers. The box would alert users that information is about to be shared with Facebook unless they click “No Thanks.” The box would disappear after 20 seconds on its own if you don’t click anything and then consent to share information is automatically assumed. Users are given a second notice the next time they log on to Facebook, but they can miss it if they quickly click to visit a friend’s page or check e-mail.

The concept behind the idea of the tool is that if users see a friend buy something, they’d want to shop from the same place too or maybe buy the same item. Companies can even buy and ad next to the feed item with the friend’s picture. The tool raises concerns of privacy. Users can decline the sharing on a site-by-site basis, but they still have to be apart of the program.

Social Security Checks Rising

In January, Social Security benefits are rising by 2.3 percent. The average check will receive an extra $24 per month. This is not much considering that food prices, medical prices, and general costs of living are significantly increasing each year. This increase is the smallest since a 2.1 percent rise in 2004. Last year it was 3.3 percent and the year before that it was 4.1 percent. Nearly 50 million Americans get social security checks and another 4 million get Supplemental Security Income payments.

The average check for a retired couple currently is $1,722. Individuals get $623. Disabled workers get $981 currently.

The government says that millions of people will have to pay higher taxes next year because the maximum amount of Social Security earnings subject to the payroll tax will rise from $97,500 to $102,000. Baby boomers, people born between 1946 and 1964, are going to be receiving Social Security payments soon. The first baby boomer will turn 62 next year. They estimate that between 2017 and 2041 Social Security will have completely depleted its reserves by paying out more in payments than it collects in payroll taxes and then each person will have to be completely responsible for their own financial well being without the help of the government for the rest of their life.
