Why You Should Buy Organic Foods

Organic fruits are products that are free of synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, irradiation, and biotechnology. They are more nutritional because plants produce more vitamins and antioxidants when grown without using pesticides and fertilizers. Organic farmers usually conserve energy and help to protect the environment by growing their foods organic. Not using fertilizers and pesticides reduce pollution of groundwater. Organic agriculture reduces the greenhouse effect and global warming. Organic meat comes from animals that were raised without being fed antibiotics or growth hormones.

When you are shopping for organic foods you should look for the USDA seal. On meat and dairy products, this seal tells you that you are buying antibiotic and hormone-free products.

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

If you have a fruit fly problem there are ways to get rid of them. You should find and get rid of their breeding sites. The flies enter homes on the damaged areas of over ripe fruits and vegetables, so get rid of food that is starting to rot. Clean other areas where the flies could be breeding, such as beneath the garbage disposal, in the bottom of the trash can, or in unwashed cans and bottles.

You can make a fruit fly trap by placing a funnel in a jar and pouring in a few tablespoons of cider vinegar. The flies will fly in but they won't find their way out.

You should cut off all of the damaged areas on fruits and vegetables as s soon as you get home and put what you can in the refrigerator because fruit flies can't survive in cold temperatures. Any fruits that can't be refrigerated should be placed in a loosely covered bowl.

People remember what they see better than what they hear and by connecting a face to a name you be more likely to remember their name. You can connect their name with a special or unique facial feature they have. It would be a good idea to write the person's name down and how you know them after the conversation has ended.

Cell Phones Cause Cancer

Cell Phones are microwave transmitters that oscillate at millions to billions of cycles per second. Those frequencies can cause cancer and other diseases by interfering with cellular DNA and its repair mechanisms. The cellular microwaves and radiation even cause rapid cell aging and makes cancerous cells grow more rapidly and aggressively. It is a good tip not to point your cellular antenna towards any exposed part of the body but radiation also comes through the keypad and mouthpiece and affects the brain, ear, and eye tissues. Belt clips allows radiation to affect the liver and kidney.

It is reported that when human stem cells are exposed to a common virus they turn into fat cells. The cells didn't just change, but they stored fat too. It proves that some cases of obesity could be caused more than just a big appetite and not enough physical activity.

For several years, researchers looked for a link between obesity and the adenovirus-36. They found that a higher percentage of fat people were infected with the virus than non fat people. When they exposed animals to the virus, the animals fattened up. The found a gene in the virus that caused animal to get obese. The also took fat tissue from people who had liposuction and removed adult stem cells from the tissue and exposed the cells to the virus in the lab. More than half of the stem cells turned into fat cells.

If there is a vial cause to obesity, a vaccine could be created within the next 5 to 10 years to prevent the virus from making some people fat.

Stop Identity Theft from Happening to You

Identity theft happens when your personal information is stolen and used without your knowledge or permission. It is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States and affects nearly 10 million Americans. It can be prevented from happening to you.

Have your mail delivered to a locked mailbox or post office box. Shred documents, especially bank and credit card statements, bills, and credit card offers, using a cross-cut shredder. Stop pre-approved credit offers by calling (888) 5-OPT-OUT or go to www.optoutprescreen.com to be removed from mailing lists. Have your mail held from being delivered while you are on vacation. Take outgoing mail, including bill payments and checks, directly to the post office.

Limit the amount of personal information you carry with you. Leave your social security card at home and only carry credit cards that are necessary. Make a photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license, all credit cards, and insurance cards. The back parts of most credit cards have important phone numbers you can call if your cards are stolen or misplaced. Keep the photocopies in a safe and secure place.

Only carry a few checks at a time and don’t put your phone number or social security number on your checks. It may be a good idea to use credit cards instead of checks or debit cards to pay because credit cards have a protection against fraudulent charges. It is easier to dispute a credit card charge than to try to get stolen money returned to your bank account.

Look over your financial information regularly to see if you are receiving monthly statements for all credit cards and bank accounts that have transactions for the most recent month or reporting period. If you are not receiving your statements, call your bank or credit card company. Make sure there are no suspicious charges on your accounts. Check your credit report to make sure it is accurate. Visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228 to order your free credit report. Your credit report should list all bank and financial accounts you have in your name.

Identity theft doesn’t have to happen to you. If you follow these tips you can keep yourself safe.

The Benefits of Water and Longevity

Water is one of the most important natural elements on earth. There are a lot of reasons that we need water for our basic survival and water has a lot of benefits that keep us healthy. Here are some of the benefits.

The human body is made up of between 55 to 75 percent of water and almost every cell in your body needs water to function properly. Lean people have more water in their bodies because muscle holds more water than fat. Your body is in constant need of replenishing itself. When you breathe you lose two to four cups of water. When your feet sweat you lose a cup of water. When the rest of your body sweats you lose two cups of water.

You have to lose 10 percent of your body weight in water to be considered dehydrated but just 2 percent can affect you physically and cause tiredness and lack of energy. Dehydration can cause problems in blood circulation because when you are dehydrated the blood is thicker and your body would have to work harder to circulate.

Getting enough water can lessen the chance of kidney stones, keep joints lubricated, prevent and lessen the effects of colds and flu, and help prevent constipation. It detoxifies the liver and kidneys. It also keeps the digestive system in order and flushes out the waste from your body. You shouldn’t have much sugar in your diet because it slows down the rate that fluid is absorbed into your body. Studies have shown that people who drank at least 5 glasses of water per day had a 41 percent less chance for a heart attack.

Water is very good for your skin because it acts as a purifier and removes toxins and waste from your body. Drinking water also helps to moisturize the skin and give it a fresh and healthy glow.

Water can aid in weight loss because it acts as a natural appetite suppressant. When you drink enough water it is easier for you body to burn and get rid of fat cells. When you don’t get enough water it is a lot harder to lose weight.

Water has a lot of benefits that are crucial to life and survival. It is recommended to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. Drinking water can help you to live a long and healthy life.

You Can Marry at Any Age in Arkansas

It is reported that a law was passed this year that allows people in Arkansas to marry at any age, even infants and toddlers, if their parents agree.

The legislation was intended to establish 18 as the minimum age to marry and allow pregnant teenagers to marry with parental consent but someone accidentally put a "not" in the bill, so it reads "In order for a person who is younger than eighteen (18) years of age and who is not pregnant to obtain a marriage license, the person must provide the county clerk with evidence of parental consent to the marriage."

A code of revision commission, which fixes typographical and technical errors in law, tried to correct the mistake but the commission went beyond its powers. The Arkansas Legislative Council asked the independent commission to make a correction but lawmakers said that a special session may be necessary.

Couple Tries to Name Baby "At" Symbol

It is reported in Beijing that a Chinese couple want to use the "At" symbol as a name for their child. The father of the child says the whole world uses it to write e-mails and when translated into Chinese it means “love him.”

It is not reported whether the "At" name was accepted or rejected by the police, who are the arbiters of names because they issue identity cards.

Written Chinese uses characters instead of an alphabet and that makes it difficult to develop new words for new things and ideas.

Texas Man Accused of Burning Girlfriend Alive During Argument

Murder charges have been filed in the burning death of Texas child-welfare caseworker Terry Leigh Lee, allegedly at the hands of her new boyfriend.

John Marshall Dodd, 41, is behind bars, accused of pouring gasoline on his girlfriend of just three months during a fight, setting her on fire and then lying to police about it, saying Lee had been burned in a kitchen accident.

More than 90 percent of Lee's body was scorched in the attack late Saturday night at her home in Conroe, Texas, near Houston. The 44-year-old caseworker of Child Protective Services died Sunday night of her injuries at an area hospital.

Neighbors said they called 911 after Dodd ran to their home, saying there had been an explosion.

Conroe Police Sgt. Mike Tindall said investigators believe the couple arrived at Lee's home after a night out. During a quarrel, Dodd grabbed a can of gas, doused Lee and set her on fire, Tindall said.

"Apparently they had been out for the evening, gotten home and then got into an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation," Tindall told The Houston Chronicle. "At some point the suspect went into the garage and got a can of gasoline and set her on fire."

Tindall told the paper that there was little fire damage to Lee's house.

Lee had been a Montgomery County caseworker and was a past winner of the Texas CPS caseworker of the year award. She has a teenage daughter, the Chronicle reported.

Dodd is in the Montgomery County Jail on $250,000 bail.

Public records show that Dodd has a past criminal record, according to the Chronicle.

Dodd is no stranger to prison, having spent time there for attempted sexual assault during a burglary, according to the newspaper.

Dodd was sentenced to five years in jail in 1993, though he was freed on parole in 1995, the Chronicle reported. No further details on that case were immediately available, but public records also indicate that Dodd has been arrested numerous times over the years on theft, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and other charges.

Lee was visited throughout the day Sunday by family, friends, co-workers and associates who came to her bedside at Memorial Hermann Hospital-The Medical Center, the Chronicle reported.

The woman's sister, Margo Duke, told the paper that Lee had been "a champion for children. ... She was auntie to so many children. ... She helped everyone."

Duke, 45, told the Chronicle she'd never met Dodd but knew that her sister had been seeing him for about three months and that he worked at a fitness center.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Internet-Obsessed Couple Let Kids Starve

A couple who authorities say were so obsessed with the Internet and video games that they left their babies starving and suffering other health problems have pleaded guilty to child neglect.

The children of Michael and Iana Straw, a boy age 22 months and a girl age 11 months, were severely malnourished and near death last month when doctors saw them after social workers took them to a hospital, authorities said. Both children are doing well and gaining weight in foster care, prosecutor Kelli Ann Viloria told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Michael Straw, 25, and Iana Straw, 23, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts each of child neglect. Each faces a maximum 12-year prison sentence.

Viloria said the Reno couple were too distracted by online video games, mainly the fantasy role-playing "Dungeons & Dragons" series, to give their children proper care.

"They had food; they just chose not to give it to their kids because they were too busy playing video games," Viloria told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Police said hospital staff had to shave the head of the girl because her hair was matted with cat urine. The 10-pound girl also had a mouth infection, dry skin and severe dehydration.

Her brother had to be treated for starvation and a genital infection. His lack of muscle development caused him difficulty in walking, investigators said.

The Straws have been given public defenders. Jeremy Bosler, head of the county public defender's office, declined to comment to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Michael Straw is an unemployed cashier, and his wife worked for a temporary staffing agency doing warehouse work, according to court records. He received a $50,000 inheritance that he spent on computer equipment and a large plasma television, authorities said.

While child abuse because of drug addiction is common, abuse rooted in video game addiction is rare, Viloria said.

Last month, experts at an American Medical Association meeting backed away from a proposal to designate video game addiction as a mental disorder, saying it had to be studied further. Some said the issue is like alcoholism, while others said there was no concrete evidence it's a psychological disease.

Patrick Killen, spokesman for Nevada Child Abuse Prevention, said video game addiction's correlation to child abuse is "a new spin on an old problem."

"As we become more technologically advanced, there's more distractions," Killen said. "It's easy for someone to get addicted to something and neglect their children. Whether it's video games or meth, it's a serious issue, and (we) need to become more aware of it."

Choking Hazard Prompts Gerber Recall

U.S.-based babyfood company Gerber is recalling around half a million packs of organic rice and oatmeal cereal because of a risk babies might choke on the product, a spokesman said on Monday.

Gerber, owned by Swiss drugs group Novartis, said there was a danger that lumps of the cereal might not dissolve properly in milk or water "and pose a potential choking hazard."

The packages were distributed in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, the company said on its Web site.

Novartis said the recall was minor and that it would have no financial impact on the group, nor would the group make provisions to cover any losses from the recall.

It said the sale of Gerber to Nestle, the world's largest food group, would continue as planned.

8-Year-Old Boy Held From Plane for Appearing on No-Fly List

An 8-year-old boy expecting to catch a plane home is denied entry for appearing on a terrorist no-fly list, reported MyFoxKansasCity.com.

Bryan Moore was set to catch his first plane trip when he arrived at an airport in Cortez, Colorado to fly home after visiting his sister, said the report.

"They almost got me scheduled in and then the lady just bowed her head and said, 'We can't get you on this plane, you're a terrorist,'" Moore said.

Click here for full story from MyFoxKansasCity.com.

The soon-to-be third grader was red flagged as a threat to national security because his name popped up on the national watch list.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, no children are on the terrorist watch list. The TSA said if a child's name matches up, it's up the airline to make the necessary changes and let them board the plane.

"It's not really fair that I couldn't get home because another man in the world was a terrorist," Moore said.

Great Lake Airlines eventually cleared up the situation, but the plane had already left, making him wait another day to come home.

Texas Mom Uses Barbecue Meat Fork to Catch Alleged Child Rapist

"He was well done."

That's what one woman said Monday after helping her son apprehend an alleged child rapist using her barbecue meat fork.

"I stuck him in his butt!" Linda Rhodes told MyFOXdfw.com, explaining how she and her son John Jennings apprehended the 17-year-old suspect Friday night in Garland, Texas.

Jennings was barbecuing chicken when he heard a 7-year-old boy calling for help. He said he saw the suspect, Deshaun Ridge, on top of the child, allegedly raping the boy.

"He stood up, and I just punched him right in the face," Jennings said. "He put his hands up and I grabbed him, and we went fighting."

Rhodes called police and then jumped into the fight to help her son apprehend the suspect. They held Ridge until police arrived.

"They were citizens that jumped in, most definitely, and did a good deed," Joe Harn, a spokesman for the Garland Police Department, told MyFOXdfw.com. "These people are heroes."

Shelton, who officers said appeared intoxicated, then called 911 to report he was "surrounded by Largo police," according to an arrest affidavit.

Wal-Mart to Sell Biblical Action Figures in Some Stores

Wal-Mart said Tuesday it will test sales in some stores of biblical action figures whose makers say they are aimed at Christian parents who prefer their children play with Samson, David or Noah rather than with a comic book character or Bratz doll.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien said the toys made by One2believe, a Valencia, Calif., company, will be offered in 425 of Wal-Mart's 3,376 discount stores and Supercenters.

One2believe Chief Executive David Socha said his products were part of a "battle for the toy box" with dolls and figures that he said carry negative messages.

"If you're very religious, it's a battle for your children's minds and what they're playing with and pretending. There are remakes out there of Satan and evil things," Socha said.

Wal-Mart's O'Brien said the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer believes there is demand for faith-based toys.

The toy line will be on some Wal-Mart shelves starting in August, mainly in the Midwest and South but also in California and as far northeast as Pennsylvania, O'Brien said.

"It is a test. It's not a national rollout," O'Brien said.

The toys, based on biblical stories, include a 3-inch figure of Daniel in the lion's den, a 12-inch talking Jesus doll and 13-inch Samson action figure.

Wal-Mart has always carried some faith products, mainly stationery, books and music, but this is the first line of toys with a faith theme, O'Brien said.

"I think there is an interest in faith-based toys and we are testing it in our stores," O'Brien said.

It is a leap in scale for One2believe, which so far has mainly sold its figures directly to churches and ministries and through its Web site, Socha said.

Thousands of Bees Won't Leave Man's Home

LILLY, Pa. - Matthew Danchanko has squatters in his new home. And they won't leave without a fight. They're honeybees _ tens of thousands of of them. They buzz through the four-bedroom house, creating a low hum and an estimated 100 pounds of honey.

Danchanko recently bought the house northeast of Johnstown, Pa. He planned to fix it up and move in. But shortly after he began renovating, the long-time residents of the house made it abundantly clear they had no intention of leaving.

Danchanko won't exterminate the unwanted guests because the honeybee population has significantly deteriorated this summer. Instead, he has found a local beekeeper who will remove the buzzing brood.

Teen Claims Spiders Alerted Her to Fire

HEMLOCK, Mich. - A woman who hates spiders is crediting them with helping save her from a house fire. Danielle Vigue, 18, says she awoke early Tuesday to find spiders in her room, and started killing them. When more showed up, she says she went across the hall and got into bed with her 15-year-old sister, Lauren.

"At first there were five, they were all around the light fixture," Danielle Vigue told The Saginaw News. "I hate spiders, they freak me out."

A fire, the newspaper said, apparently was smoldering in the attic of the home about 90 miles northwest of Detroit.

A few hours later, Vigue's 48-year-old mother, Debra, and 8-year-old sister, Shelby, smelled smoke, and flames greeted the family when they opened the door to the room Danielle Vigue had earlier left.

"I will never kill another spider again," she told WNEM-TV in Saginaw.

Richland Township Fire Chief Gary Wade, a 30-year veteran of the Saginaw County department, was surprised by Vigue's story.

"I've never heard of spiders saving someone from a fire before," Wade said.

Larvae Take Up Residence on Man's Head

CARBONDALE, Colo. - Doctors thought the strange, bleeding bumps on Aaron Dallas' head might be from gnat bites or shingles. Then the bumps started moving.

A doctor found five active bot fly larvae living beneath the skin atop Dallas' head.

"I'd put my hand back there and feel them moving. I thought it was blood coursing through my head," Dallas told the (Glenwood Springs) Post Independent.

"I could hear them. I actually thought I was going crazy."

Dallas said he likely received the larval infestation while on a trip to Belize this summer. Bot fly infections are not uncommon in parts of Central and South America.

Adult bot flies are hairy and look like bees, without bristles. The larvae, which are about one-third the size of a penny, were living in a pit 2- to 3- millimeters wide. They were removed Thursday.

"It was weird and traumatic," said Dallas, of Carbondale. "I would get this pain that would drop me to my knees."

After a specialist told him he might have shingles, Dallas tried different creams and salves. But the pain only got worse.

"When I saw him again, it was pretty obvious something else was going on," said Dr. Kimball Spence, who could see the spots moving on Dallas' head. "There's an open pit. You see a little activity, not necessarily the larvae, but a fluctuation of the fluid in the pit."

Dallas' wife, Midge Dallas, teased him about it.

"I told him, 'I will love you through your maggots,'" she told the newspaper.

But Dallas saw little to laugh about.

"It's much funnier to everyone else," he said. "It makes my stomach turn over. It was cruel."

The 2-year-old cat was adopted as a small kitten and raised in a third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. How to Pick and Store Fruit

Have you ever been in a grocery store and was a little confused on what to look for when selecting the perfect fruit? I’ll tell you some things to look for.

When it comes to bananas you should pick ones that are yellow and have no brown spotting. They can be a little bit green as long as they are not completely green. Do not put bananas in the refrigerator because it makes them rot and darken quicker. You should lay them on their side on a counter. Laying a banana on its back can bruise it and laying it on its side helps it to ripen better.

When it comes to cantaloupe the best time to buy them is between June and August. When picking one you should make sure that it is free of dents and bruises. Minor dents and bruises will not spoil the fruit inside. To check if it’s ripe, gently press your thumb on its stem at the end of the fruit to see if it is soft. You should also sniff it to see if it smells sweet.

When it comes to peaches the best time to buy them is between August and September. To check its ripeness, you should look for golden undertones with a slight reddish color. Sniff the fruit to see if it smells sweet. If it doesn’t have a sweet odor it has been picked too early. It should also be firm and not hard. Do not store peaches in the refrigerator or they will become mushy instead of ripe. You should place them in a paper bag for a day or two so that they ripen correctly.

Strawberries are good to buy any time of the summer. You should check to make sure they are firm, have a vibrant color, and free of bruises. You should also sniff them to see if they smell fresh. Make sure you rinse them thoroughly and store them in an airtight drawer in the refrigerator to keep them fresh longer.

When buying a watermelon you should look for one with a dark green outer shell and that is slightly yellow or lighter green stripes. A watermelon that is too ripe will be sugary and hollow. Make sure it doesn’t have cracks, bruises, or soft spots. Storing a watermelon whole without cutting it makes it last longer.

To check the ripeness of a fruit if helps to flick the fruit with your finger on its side. You should be listening for a ping sound and not a thud sound. A fruit tastes best when you eat it within a few days of buying it.

Types of Men You Shouldn’t Date

There are certain types of men that you should avoid dating if you are looking for a long and happy relationship.

Don’t date the momma’s boy. They usually live with their mother or a close enough for them to come by whenever they want to. In his mind, you will live up to his mother and he will always compare you to her whether he is verbal about it or not. He will expect you to do all of the things for him his mother does. He will always take his mother’s side in a disagreement. The momma’s boy usually has to talk to his mother several times a day on the phone. Get rid of him by telling him that you hate his mother.

Don’t date the body builder. He usually has a ton of pictures of himself and loves to go to the gym more than being with you. He loves to look at himself in the mirror more than looking at you and he will like the way his body looks more then he likes you. He may even criticize you badly if your body doesn’t look fit and perfect enough for him.

Don’t date the womanizer. You don’t want to spend the time you two are apart wondering if he is with someone else or what he may be doing. You don’t want to date a man that gives too much attention to other women when you two are together. A womanizer can be hard to trust and usually has problems with committing to one person. The usually want to keep their options open.

Don’t date the workaholic. The workaholic is going places career wise but he would be more focused on working than you. He would even cancel dates to go to work or work overtime. His work will always come first and foremost in his life. You will feel like you have to make an appointment to see him and spend time with him. He would even put future plans for you two, such as marriage and kids, on the backburner while he focuses on his very long term career goals. You will feel like his married to his job and you are the mistress. He will be so busy working that you won’t feel included in his life.

Don’t date the grown kid. He is usually very immature and seems like he will never grow up. Don’t waste your time waiting for him to grow up. Some guys have that “peter pan syndrome” where they want to act like a kid forever and never grow up. A lot of these kind of guys may still live with their mother too. They don’t want to get or keep a job or act like a responsible adult. They expect for you to be like their mother and take care of all of their needs, including financially. It is hard to carry a mature and deep conversation with them. You feel like dating an overgrown kid instead of dating a real man.

Anti-aging Vitamins

Are you interested in spending the rest of your life looking and feeling young and healthy? Aging is the result of the body’s cells dying faster than new cells being created. Most of the consequences we suffer from aging come from lifestyle choices more than from the natural aging process.

It is important to take vitamins for overall healthy but they also play a major part when it comes to slowing down the aging process. As we age, our bodies don’t process nutrients as well, so you have to increase your nutrient intake. You should take a multivitamin daily to get important nutritional protection against free radicals and help eliminate toxins.

Vitamin D helps to prevent osteoporosis and B Vitamins help to prevent heart disease and memory loss.

The mineral selenium helps to protect the body from cancers, including skin cancer. It also helps with tissue elasticity and slows down the aging and hardening of tissues that are associated with oxidation. The mineral can be found in whole grain cereals, seafood, garlic, and eggs.

Vitamin E is an important antioxidant because it helps to delay the aging process and protects cell membranes and prevents damages to enzymes. It also helps to inactivate free radicals to make them less likely to cause damage. Putting the vitamin on your skin can reduce damage caused by sun exposure and limit the production of cancer-causing cells. It also reduces wrinkles and improves the texture of the skin. It can be found in sunflower oil, grains, oats, nuts, and dairy products.

Vitamin C helps to slow down the aging process and helps to repair free radicals and keeps them from becoming cancerous.

Vitamin K helps to reduce many degenerative diseases.

Lutien helps to keep your eyes healthy and helps to reduce Age-related Macular Degeneration. It can be found in leafy vegetables, such as spinach, collard greens, and kale.
