Singer Michael Jackson Buried Without Brain

The singer Michael Jackson will be buried and laid to rest this week without his brain. The Jackson family decided to have it kept so that tests can be run on it to help determine his exact cause of death. They had the choice of waiting up to three weeks for the brain to be returned to them and then bury him or bury him without it, which is what they decided to do. The examination of Jackson's brain will not begin until after two weeks after he died so that the brain will harden enough to slice it open. A forensic neuropathologist will test his brain for past drug use, whether he had overdoses in the past, and other things. China's Deadliest Infectious Disease is Now AIDS

For the first time last year, AIDS has become the most infectious disease in China. 6,897 of its citizens died within the first nine months of 2008 due to the disease. The Chinese government has improved the reporting of HIV/AIDS statistics and is acknowledging its presence in the country. China has denied that AIDS is a problem in the country for a long time, partly due to the low amount of reported deaths.

In recent years, leaders of China have more open about the disease, offered free treatment for the poor, anonymous testing, and have banned discrimination against people who have the disease. The government of China and UNAIDS estimate that the number of citizens in China living with HIV is estimated at 700,000 and 85,000 of these people have full blown AIDS. About 34,864 people have died from aids since its first reported death in 1985. The main causes of HIV infections are due to sex, drug abuse, unsanitary blood plasma, and tainted transfusions in hospitals.

Kentucky Sues the Makers of Drug OxyContin

On Thursday, Kentucky officials sued the makers of OxyContin, a prescription painkiller, because of its harmful effects on its residents. The lawsuit wants reimbursement for the costs of drug abuse programs, law enforcement, and prescription drug payments through Medicaid and the Kentucky Pharmaceutical Assistance Program.

The makers of OxyContin are defending themselves by saying that the package has warnings against abusing the drug and the company shouldn’t be responsible for people who abuse the drug.

The lawsuit is also seeking punitive damages and a court-monitored fund that would pay for a program that would notify the users of possible harms of the drug and fund the research on the effects of the drug.

Kentucky officials decided to go through with the lawsuit after the drug maker and three executives pleaded guilty to misleading the public about its risk of addiction. They agreed to pay $634.5 million in fines for saying that the drug is less addictive and has less of a possibility of drug abuse than other pain medications.
