You-Tube Creates Anti-Piracy Filters

The website YouTube has created a way to get rid of copyrighted clips. They have made filtering tools so that the owners of copyrighted material can block their material from being shown on YouTube. They also have the option for owners of copyrighted material to sell ads around their material if they want the clips to stay available on YouTube.

Seven months ago, Viacom Inc. sued YouTube for $1 billion dollars for showing thousands of copyrighted clips that the company owned. Over time, movie and TV studios have become upset with piracy through YouTube even though YouTube says it follows copyrighted laws by removing protected videos when requested.

You Tube has been working with Google engineers to make tools that can flag copyrighted video. They have been working at it for the past six months. YouTube also needs copyright holders to provide copies of the video that they want to protect so that they can compare the files provided with the material uploaded on its site. The movie and TV studios will have to provide all of their copyright material if they don’t want it on YouTube. Without doing this, YouTube will have a difficult way of knowing which material is legally or illegally posted on the site.

Social Security Checks Rising

In January, Social Security benefits are rising by 2.3 percent. The average check will receive an extra $24 per month. This is not much considering that food prices, medical prices, and general costs of living are significantly increasing each year. This increase is the smallest since a 2.1 percent rise in 2004. Last year it was 3.3 percent and the year before that it was 4.1 percent. Nearly 50 million Americans get social security checks and another 4 million get Supplemental Security Income payments.

The average check for a retired couple currently is $1,722. Individuals get $623. Disabled workers get $981 currently.

The government says that millions of people will have to pay higher taxes next year because the maximum amount of Social Security earnings subject to the payroll tax will rise from $97,500 to $102,000. Baby boomers, people born between 1946 and 1964, are going to be receiving Social Security payments soon. The first baby boomer will turn 62 next year. They estimate that between 2017 and 2041 Social Security will have completely depleted its reserves by paying out more in payments than it collects in payroll taxes and then each person will have to be completely responsible for their own financial well being without the help of the government for the rest of their life.

Scientist Explain Reasons for Chocolate Cravings

A study has found there is a type of bacteria in the digestive system that craves chocolate. Everyone has microbes in their stomach but people who have chocolate cravings have different colonies of bacteria.

The study was done by finding 11 men who never ate chocolate and 11 men who ate chocolate everyday. All of the men wee healthy, not obese, and were fed the same foods for five days. The researchers examined the byproducts of their metabolism in their blood and urine and found that a dozen substances were different between the two groups. The amino acid glycine levels were higher in the men that ate chocolate. People who ate chocolate also had lower levels of bad cholesterol.

It is known that bacteria interact with what you eat and studies have shown that intestinal bacteria changes when people lose weight. Someday, some types of obesity will be able to be treated by changing the bacteria in the intestines and stomach.

GM OnStar System Plans to Stop Stolen Cars

The GM OnStar system is coming out with a new service that could literally stop a car that has been stolen and the radio could tell the thief to pull off to the side of the road because the police are watching. The system could also tell police where a stolen car is located. The officer could tell OnStar to slow down the moving vehicle to a halt.

Currently, drivers can call OnStar if they need emergency help with their car. Subscribers can choose not to have the new service if they don’t want it.

This could be a very useful service to decrease crime and car theft. It is estimated that 404 people were killed in the US last year in dangerous police car chases. The service could help high speed chases end less deadly. OnStar hopes that one day they will be able to have it to where a stolen car could be impossible to start.

In Boutte, LA, an eleven year old boy led police on a chase that reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour. His parents, Leona Calloway and Rodney Brown, were charged with improper supervision of a minor and allowing an unlicensed minor to drive. The child was charged with felony flight from an officer, reckless driving, speeding, passing on the shoulder, improper lane usage, and having no driver’s license. The parents and the boy were not arrested or sent to jail and the child was released to the custody of an aunt.

The chase started at 6:30 in the morning on the Interstate outside of New Orleans when a state trooper saw a sport utility vehicle and clocked him doing 80 miles per hour in a 60 mile per hour zone. The trooper turned on his lights and siren to stop the driver but the boy accelerated and passed other cars on the shoulder and forced cars off the road. The boy eventually got off the Interstate and drove to the Burger King that his mother worked at. The police say that the boy was trying to drive home after dropping off his disabled father at an appointment at a hospital in Kenner.

Oldest Brother from Pop Group Hanson Leaves Hospital

Isaac Hanson, oldest brother of the pop group Hanson, left the hospital on Friday after doctors removed a blood clot that made his right arm painfully swell during a concert. He had surgery on Thursday for venous thoracic outlet syndrome, which interrupted the blood flow from his arm to his heart.

In the next few months, he will have to have a rib removed to help to open his vein and prevent any more clots. In the meantime, he will have to be on blood thinners. His condition isn’t life threatening but there is a chance that it can cause permanent disability if it isn’t treated in good time.

iPod Sets Man’s Pants on Fire

A man in Atlanta says that he had placed his iPod Nano in his pocket and it burst into flames causing his pant to catch fire. He also had a glossy piece of paper in his pocket that he believes shielded him from being burned. He believes that the iPod’s battery is responsible because it uses a lithium ion battery, the same kind of battery that was recalled for setting laptops on fire. The Apple company says that they would replace the device when he sends it back. This is not the first time this kind of thing has happened with iPods.

Funeral Directors in Philadelphia Steeling and Selling Body Parts

In Philadelphia, three funeral directors sold a total of 244 bodies for $1,000 each to a former oral surgeon who collected the bones, tissue, and skin from the bodies to be used for transplants. The transplants were used worldwide by unknowing medical patients.

A man named Michael Mastromarino, a former oral surgeon who ran the Biomedical Tissue Services of Fort Lee, N.J., ran the operation with help of a team of “cutters” who stole the body parts. The funeral directors named Louis Garzone, Gerald Garzone, and James CcCafferty were arrested and have thousands of counts against them, including running a corrupt organization, forgery, and theft of body parts. Mastromarino plans to surrender and fight the charges he has against him. He says that he was victimized by the funeral directors and that they were in charge of getting consent and all he was suppose to do was take care of the tissue and send samples to the processors.

The families of the bodies thought that their loved ones were cremated, but the bodies were left unrefrigerated for days and sometimes put in alleys next to the funeral home until a cutter arrived. The funeral directors lied and forged death certificates to say that the bodies had died from heart attacks or blunt-force trauma. They also made up fake names for the bodies and forged family consent forms and the authorities have found the true identities of only 48 of the 244 bodies. They also reduced the ages of the bodies and changed their dates of death to make it look as if the parts were newer and fresher.

The parts were used to treat burns, replace broken bones, and provide for other medical needs. One woman is suing because she says that she received hepatitis by getting a transplant from one of the bodies that had HIV, hepatitis C, and cancer.

Woman Loses Thousands of Dollars in Lawsuit for Downloading Music

A woman in Minnesota, named Jammie Thomas, was court ordered to pay $222,000 for downloading and sharing copyrighted music online. The record industry wants to make an example out of her and send the message that downloading and sharing music is not okay or legal.

Thomas is ordered to pay the six record companies that sued her for $9,250 for each of the 24 songs that they are focusing on in this case. They say she shared a total of 1,702 songs. This is the first time that one of the music industry's lawsuits went to trial. Most people settle and pay the companies a few thousand dollars. Thomas thought that she didn't do anything wrong and proceeded with the lawsuit against her. Thomas claimed she didn't own a file sharing account with Kazaa but evidence showed that the Internet address belonged to her.

Jammie Thomas is 30 years old and lives paycheck to paycheck and now she could get a fourth of her paycheck garnished for the rest of her life. Including the attorney fees, she could owe nearly half a million dollars.

Kentucky Sues the Makers of Drug OxyContin

On Thursday, Kentucky officials sued the makers of OxyContin, a prescription painkiller, because of its harmful effects on its residents. The lawsuit wants reimbursement for the costs of drug abuse programs, law enforcement, and prescription drug payments through Medicaid and the Kentucky Pharmaceutical Assistance Program.

The makers of OxyContin are defending themselves by saying that the package has warnings against abusing the drug and the company shouldn’t be responsible for people who abuse the drug.

The lawsuit is also seeking punitive damages and a court-monitored fund that would pay for a program that would notify the users of possible harms of the drug and fund the research on the effects of the drug.

Kentucky officials decided to go through with the lawsuit after the drug maker and three executives pleaded guilty to misleading the public about its risk of addiction. They agreed to pay $634.5 million in fines for saying that the drug is less addictive and has less of a possibility of drug abuse than other pain medications.
